Volunteer on Labor Day!

Monday, September 4, 2023 is Labor Day, a day to honor and recognize the American labor movement as well as the contributions of the American workforce.  This day was declared a national holiday in 1894 by President Grover Cleveland. Here is some history.

The Open Hearts Foundation invites you to celebrate our corner of the workforce: America’s charities. Whether you work at a charity or volunteer, here are some interesting statistics and how our workers, volunteers, and sector supports the U.S.:

  • As of December 2022, nonprofit institutions employed over 12.5 million workers.  That means 1 in every 10 non-governmental workers in the U.S.

  • For our home state of California, one in every 14 jobs is at a non-profit.

  • Here are some statistics of nonprofits' contributions to California. Did you know the sector generates 15 percent of California’s State GDP?

  • 7,883,285 volunteers contribute 688.6 million hours of service in the state of California

  • Volunteer service work is worth an estimated $16.6 billion for the state of California

We believe in volunteers and we are grateful to our volunteers around the world that join us in the Open Hearts Movement. Without volunteers (and donors!) our mission and other nonprofit organizations would not be able to provide the lifesaving programs and services to communities in need.  THANK YOU!

In alignment with our Open Hearts Philosophy: What can you do to help others this Labor Day?

Here are some resources, ideas and inspiration for you:

  • Celebrate Labor Day - Labor day is about taking a moment to rest and celebrate a hard day’s work. Many of us host a BBQ, go on a hike, or simply spend quality time with loved ones.  What can you do to help others? Open up your BBQ to a neighbor, invite a friend or senior to take a short walk with you in nature, or maybe your family can work together to donate food or clothing to a local shelter.
